Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to identify experiences of sexual harassment and coping behaviors of elementary, middle and high school female teachers.

Method: Participants were 207 female teachers employed in elementary, middle and high schools in the capital and provincial regions. Directly after receiving the written consent of the participants data were collected from May 1, 2012 to June 8, 2012 using a modified questionnaire by the researcher, which was originally developed by Lee in 2003.

Result: Sixty-nine teachers(33.3%) reported experiences of verbal sexual harassment, 20 teachers(9.7%) experienced physical and visual sexual harassment, and 39 teachers (19.0%) experienced indirect sexual harassment experienced by others. Whether there were any colleagues who were trying to help her when she was experiencing sexual harassment, 40.4% answered none. Regarding experience of any sexual harassment pre vention effort or helping victims, 76.0% reported none. As for the preventive education of sexual harassment, 76.8% answered they received such education in the school. There was significant difference depending on the forms of employment, the length of service and the marital status of respondents(p<.05).

Conclusion: The research shows that the sexual harassment damage of female teachers occurs to anyone with a probability. Many female teachers don¡¯t know the department responsible for the problem of sexual harassment in their school. In particular, the shorter working period or the non-regular teachers was harsh.
